Peace Poster Competition 2018/9
The International Peace Poster Competition was created in 1988 to give young people the opportunity to creatively express their feelings for world peace and to share their visions with the world. Approximately 600,000 children from more than 65 countries participate in the contest annually.
The competition is open to young people who will be 11, 12 or 13 years old on November 15, either in schools or youth groups such as Scouts and Guides. Within our own District there is also a trophy for the best entry from a Special School. The theme changes each year and for 2018/19 it was “Kindness Matters”.
Our Lions Club has participated in the International Peace Poster Competition for many years winning our District heats on two occasions.
Local schools and one guide group take part in the heat run by our Lions Club on a regular basis and this year we welcomed entries from Shorefields Special School after a gap of some years..
Our overall winner for 2018/19 was Madeline Scott from Tendring Technology College and she received her prize at a recent ceremony in front of our Club at our annual Presentation Evening.
In the 2017/18 competition, Mia Reed from Manningtree High School went on to win the East Anglian Heat and the Multiple District (for the UK) Heat she was then selected as one of the 23 merit award winners at the International Final.
As a result of these achievements, Mia attended the Lions Day with the United Nations at the Palace of Westminster where she received further awards and she was acclaimed at the East Anglian Lions Annual Convention as this is the first time that an entry from East Anglia had won the Multiple District Heat and only the second time in the 30 years of the Competition that a UK winner had gone on to win a prize at the International Final. Her picture was displayed at the UN Headquarters in New York in March and later at the International Association of Lions Clubs Annual Convention in Las Vegas later that year.
